“Here's to another 100 years of excellence, growth, opportunity and innovation at China Three Gorges University (CTGU).”
Teacher Thomas Ramsey posted this congratulatory message on his WeChat moments to mark the upcoming 100th anniversary of the founding of CTGU.
Asked what he felt on the 100th anniversary of the university, Ramsey said, “it’s an exciting time and it’s an honor to be part of it. I wanna thank the university for supporting me and believing in me and helping me along the learning curve of understanding Chinese culture. Being here to be able to participate in this 100th year celebration is a very great honor.”
Ramsey first came to Yichang in 2010 and has become attached to the city on the Yangtze River. “My friends gave me a Chinese name, Li Jianglong. Jiang means the Yangtze River and the name also sounds like Li Xiaolong (Bruce Lee), a famous kungfu star,” said Ramsey.
In 2015, he began teaching at Three Gorges University’s School of Foreign Languages. Since then, he has become a campus star thanks to his inspiring classes and warmhearted personality. To develop students’ independent thinking and communicative competence, he fosters in-class discussion, encouraging them to give speeches or make presentations in class.
He insists that students "be comfortable with being uncomfortable". In other words, college students should rise to challenges and not be afraid of making mistakes.
Turning 60 this year has not dissuaded Thomas from studying for his Ph.D. at the university.
After spending over a decade living and working in Yichang, Ramsey said he was half an Yichang man. With its friendly people, lively students, interesting history, open environment and spectacular scenery, the city has become his second home.
Ramsey said that he has received a lot of help, warmth and kindness since coming to Yichang and was keen to give something back to his adoptive city.
When China faced criticism, he urged people from other countries to look at the facts for themselves before making a judgement.
Ramsey helped shoot the English video series “Orange City” to promote Yichang’s orange industry. The popular video has reached 360 million people on the internet.
