Wenjiaping Village in Changyang Autonomous County celebrated the 2023 Yichang Farmers' Harvest Festival on September 22.
Harvest Festival is the day set aside in the Chinese calendar to honor farmers’ contributions to the country. The event gives farmers an opportunity to have fun, celebrate their hard work throughout the year and show off their skills.
The theme of this year's festival was vegetables. There were dance and song performances, and a smorgasbord of activities including fruit and vegetable picking, food tasting, a painting exhibition and sightseeing.
Changyang Tujia Autonomous County is home to the Tujia minority, so the activities were full of Tujia elements. The hosts were dressed in Tujia costumes, and performances were very much Tujia in character.
Mountainous Changyang is home to many alpine vegetables. The county has 300,000 mu (20,000 hectares) of vegetables and notches up annual sales of over 3 billion yuan (US$411 million). Wenjiaping Village, the site of the event, is renowned for its 10,000 mu (666 hectares) of tomatoes which generate annual revenue of around 180 million yuan.
Local farmers displayed an array of agricultural products including Yichang oranges, green tea, Changyang vegetables, Zhizheping rice and Yuan'an mushrooms.
Other areas of Yichang also plan to organize activities. For example, Zigui will hold a small fruit harvest festival and Yiling will stage the ninth Hubei Yichang Citrus Festival.
