On September 6, Yichang city of China and Larnaka city of Cyprus signed an agreement online establishing a friendly cooperative relationship.

The agreement, witnessed by Mayor of Yichang, Ma Zejiang, and Andreas Vyras, Mayor of Larnaka, presents vast collaboration opportunities particularly in the areas of trade and investment, urban development, healthcare services, public health, education and research, and cultural tourism.

Larnaka, located in southeast Cyprus near the Mediterranean Sea, serves as the country's main gateway with its largest international airport and second-largest seaport. Yichang, the third-largest city in Hubei Province, is internationally acclaimed for its iconic Three Gorges Dam, earning it the "Capital of Hydroelectricity” title.

Liu Yantao, the Chinese Ambassador to Cyprus, expects that the two cities will join the "China-Cyprus Friendship City Alliance" as founding members and look to establish friendships and cooperation with additional cities.

Andreas Vyras expressed that the signing of the agreement will promote links of exchange and cooperation between the two cities as a driving force for growth and development.

The collaboration between Yichang and Larnaca is not a fortuitous event but rather the result of long-term interactions.

As early as March 2023, the Cyprus-China Cultural and Communication Association visited Yichang and conveyed the willingness to carry out friendly exchanges and cooperation with Yichang.

In June 2023, Yichang Tianwen School and Cyprus Pascal Private English School signed a cooperation agreement, initiating friendly collaboration in the field of education.

As per Yichang's invitation, the delegation from Larnaka City is set to visit Yichang in November this year.
