On noon of July 20, Shui Chengliang took a five-minute stroll to the newly opened canteen to enjoy her lunch.
The canteen's lunch menu has eight dishes and offers free soup, providing residents with a wide range of choices. "It's so much easier to get food here than to cook for ourselves at home," said Shui, a 78-year-old resident in Yichang’s Sanjiangyuan Community.
Yichang now has 132 community canteens and meal assistance facilities like this, with the main focus of serving senior residents in their neighborhoods. Together these canteens work to serve 262,000 seniors.
At the Mingfeng community, the canteen recently doubled its dish options to four non-vegetarian and four vegetarian, plus the free soup, while keeping prices the same.
The canteen covers an area of about 150 square meters, with 12 tables and 48 chairs. To facilitate the elderly, the tables and chairs in the canteen have been specially designed, such as the addition of armrests with holes on the tables and the installation of additional weights and wheels to the chairs. Free refills are available for the residents, and seniors over 60 can enjoy their meal for only 10 yuan.
In recent years, the Civil Affairs Bureau of Yichang City has increased the services offered to the elderly near their homes, including building a network of meal assistance services for the elderly.
The Civil Affairs Bureau of Yichang City provides free venues to community-based home care service organizations that have community canteens within their premises, and supports their chain operation.
For private investors of community canteens, the civil affairs department grants land, tax and other policy incentives. Soon, with the completion of the city's intelligent elderly service platform, which has cost 79.12 million yuan, the canteens will offer online ordering and delivery services.
