An electric convertible container ship was launched in Yichang Shipbuilding Industrial Park, marking a new milestone in Yichang's new energy shipbuilding industry.
The ship, which was built by Zhijiang Shengmao Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., is the first electric convertible container ship in the Han River (a tributary of the Yangtze River) Basin as well as the first made in Hubei province.
The "Huahang Xinneng 1" ship, which was launched on July 13, is equipped with battery-driven dual-propulsion motors. It is about 80 meters long, with a maximum designed speed of 18 kilometers per hour and a one-way range of 175 kilometers. It can carry 120 20-foot containers, as well as bulk cargo such as coal, sand and gravel.
The ship will be put into operation in the 150-kilometer section between Yangluo Port and Xiantao Port of the Han River. It is also qualified to sail on the Yangtze River.
"The running cost of this electric ship is significantly lower than that of diesel and LNG-fueled ships," said Qu Yang, head of Zhijiang Shengmao Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. Electric ships have simple structures, stable operation and low maintenance costs, making them more adaptable to future trends in environmental protection.
Zhijiang's annual shipbuilding capacity has reached 1.12 million tonnes, and 86 ships were launched in 2022, of which 24 were new energy ships. In the first half of 2023, the city built 75 ships, 21 being new energy ships, with a total industrial output value of 3.2 billion yuan (US$446 million).
