Twenty years ago, the Three Gorges Hydropower Station began to generate power, achieving its designed full power generating capacity in July 2012.
By July 10, 2023, the station has generated more than an overall 1.6 trillion kWh of electricity, equivalent to all the household electricity consumed across China this last year.
The clean energy it has produced is estimated to be equivalent to that generated by 480 million tonnes of standard coal, meaning a 1.32 billion tonne reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
With 34 hydropower generating units, it is the world’s largest hydropower station in terms of installed capacity (22.5 million kilowatts).
The power generated by the plant is transmitted to central China, eastern China and Guangdong province.
