Yichang has allocated 466 million yuan (US$64 million) to compensate fishermen affected by the 10-year ban on fishing in the Yangtze River, a local government report has shown.
All 2,607 Yichang fishermen able and willing to work have either found jobs or started their own businesses, the Yichang Municipal Government said in a report submitted to the 10th meeting of the seventh session of the Standing Committee of the Municipal People's Congress held from June 28 to 29. All qualified fishermen have also been included in the local pension fund program.
Yichang has provided further assistance to 63 fishermen who had difficulties finding jobs, and paid additional subsidies.
The Yangtze River is one of the richest rivers in the world in terms of aquatic biodiversity.
To promote the recovery of aquatic biodiversity, China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced in January 2020 a tentative 10-year perennial fishing ban on the Yangtze River's main stream and important tributaries. The ban had to be implemented by January 1, 2021 at the latest. Fishing is accordingly now prohibited.
Since 2020, Yichang's fisheries enforcement team has conducted more than 1,000 enforcement inspections and cruised more than 30,000 kilometers. The city's public security authorities have investigated 335 criminal cases involving fishing.
Yichang will continue to carry out multi-departmental joint law enforcement, focusing on the sale of prohibited fishing gear and illegal sales of protected aquatic wildlife.
