The Sound of Xiajiang Haozi, a live-action drama, premiered at the Cultural Tourist Area of Qu Yuan’s Hometown on the night of June 22. The show attracted over 12,000 locals and tourists over its three consecutive performances during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday. This immersive show is a highlight of the night tour in the scenic area.
Xiajiang Haozi is a collection of working songs that boatmen would sing at Xiling Gorge, a section of the Yangtze River. The songs helped them command and synchronize boat-pulling movements when sailing in dangerous waterways. Xiajiang Haozi was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage in June 2008.

The performance begins with a group of old boatmen singing haozi with bare upper bodies and white cloth on their heads while they pull a boat. It features more than 20 long-lost haozi songs, telling the touching stories of an old boatman and his fellow villagers relocating to support the construction of the Three Gorges Project.
