Woman rescued after car plunges down road

A tired woman driver fell asleep at the wheel on June 21 while driving on National Highway 351 and plunged off the road.
In wet and slippery conditions, her car left the road near Gaojiao Bridge, and plunged down the road. Unable to find her cellphone, the woman nevertheless managed to climb out of the car and shout for help. But no one heard her.
She lay beside the wreckage of her car for more than 24 hours.
It wasn’t until noon the next day that nearby villagers heard her cry and called the police.
The Fire and Rescue Brigade of Wufeng County in Yichang City received the call just after noon on June 22 and rushed to the spot. In complex terrain made slippery by heavy rain, the rescuers picked their way down the slope to the injured woman. She and her wrecked car lay about 100 meters above a lower section of the road.
The woman had multiple injuries and was very weak and cold. But she was still conscious and her life was not in danger. One of the rescuers took off his orange overalls and put them on her to keep her warm.
Conscious of possible internal injuries, the rescue team used ropes to make a traction system, bringing her back up to the road meter by meter, with an experienced firefighter exploring the path in front of the squad.
Bringing her painstakingly back up to the road level took more than two hours. When the rescue team reached the road, they were able to transfer the woman to a waiting ambulance to take her to hospital.
