The Yangtze River to Han River Diversion Project started construction on Tuesday in Yiling District.

Connecting the South-North Water Diversion Project and the Three Gorges Project, this will help to further open up the water transfer channel from the Yangtze River to the north.

The Yangtze River to Han River Diversion Project is a follow-up water project of the South-North Water Diversion Project, with a multi-year average diversion volume of 3.9 billion cubic meters of water.

This project will take water from Longtanxi on the left bank of the Three Gorges Reservoir, passing through Yichang City and Xiangyang City, and ending at the right bank of the Han River downstream from the Danjiangkou Reservoir Dam in Danjiangkou City.

It spans a total length of 194.7 kilometers, with 193.9 kilometers of tunnels, and a construction period of 108 months. The project has been approved with investments totaling 58.235 billion yuan ( US$ 8.1 billion ).

The project will cover five townships at a total length of 66.3 kilometers, with the relocation affecting 129 households and 359 people.

It will improve the water ecology and supply water to the middle and lower reaches of the Han River, which plays an important role in optimizing the allocation of water resources from the Han River basin.

The South-to-North Water Diversion Project is an important strategic infrastructure decision that will optimize water resources, boost sustainable economic and social development, and improve people's livelihoods.
