Groundbreaking ceremony for the deep walnut processing project.
The first phase of the project involves an investment of 188 million yuan (US$26 million). It includes three intelligent production lines for primary and deep processing of walnuts.
These three production lines are expected to produce 3,000 tonnes of walnut kernels, 2,000 tonnes of walnut oil, and 300 tonnes of walnut peptides per year.
After production, average annual sales revenue will reach 320 million yuan and create 500 new jobs.
In 2013, Zigui designated the walnut industry as the leading industry in the semi-alpine areas of the county.
Since 2017, the county has budgeted 10 million yuan per year for the walnut industry development fund.
From 2017 to 2022, the production of walnuts has grown at an annual rate of 30 percent reaching 6,500 tonnes this past year.
At present, the walnut planting area in Zigui County covers more than 14,666 hectares, including 12 towns and more than 30,000 farmers.
The walnut industry has gradually developed into the second-largest forestry and fruit industry in the county just behind navel oranges. Walnuts are "gold fruits" for farmers in the semi-alpine regions.
