The first slab of the north section of Yiling Yangtze River Bridge was dismantled on June 13 and the 20-meter-long, 1-meter-wide slab hoisted by crane onto a truck.
Three spans of the Shengli 3rd Road interchange section of the bridge will be removed by July 10. Each span consists of eight slabs.
Yiling Yangtze River Bridge serves Yichang's principal urban area. Opened to traffic in 2001, it has been in operation for 22 years, 2 years more than the cable's normal life span.
To reduce the impact of construction work on traffic, the bridge cable will be replaced while the northern part of Yiling Yangtze River Bridge is being renovated.

Yiling Yangtze River Bridge starts from Qiaonan Road in the south, crosses the Yangtze River and then heads north to Tiyuchang Road. The 936-meter-long bridge is designed as a two-way, four-lane urban arterial road.
Before the completion of the Yiling Yangtze River Bridge, traffic between the central urban area and Dianjun District largely depended on ferries.
Construction of the bridge began in November 1998. The only three-tower, cable-stayed bridge over the river at that time, the Yiling Yangtze River Bridge has the world's longest span for a bridge of this type.
Yiling Yangtze River Northern Approach Bridge will be demolished in 2023, and a new expressway built.
The expressway starts at the intersection of Shengli 3rd Road and Yanjiang Avenue and extends northward along Shengli 3rd Road to Chengdong Avenue right up to the end of Juxiang Avenue.
When completed in August 2026, it will reduce rush hour driving time on the Shengli 3rd Road - Chengdong Avenue - Gangyao Road from 30 minutes to 5 minutes, making the rapid traffic linkage of Dianjun District, Xiling District, Wujia District and Yiling District a reality.
