Yichang’s 18 ship enterprises have added 140 new orders so far this year, 12 percent higher than the total number of orders last year. Among them, Yichang Damen Shipbuilding Co., Ltd, Yichang Xinhui Shipbuilding and Repair Co., Ltd., and Hubei Dongchuan Heavy Industry Co. lead in total value.

Yichang expects local companies to build 150 ships this year combining for a total value of 8 billion yuan (US$1.12 billion), including 50 new energy-powered ships. The fleet of new energy ships planned for this year, of which 10 will be pure electric vessels, is nearly 80 percent more than that in 2022.

Yichang is rich in green power resources, and industry leaders such as Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited, Shandong Haike Group and Guangzhou Tinci Materials Technology Co., Ltd. are stationed in Yichang, making the city a hotbed for breakthroughs in new energy batteries.

Yichang Shipbuilding Industrial Park operates four shipbuilding bases in Yichang City, spanning across Zhijiang, Yidu, Zigui and Changyang.

The Yidu base, also known as the Yichang Green Intelligent Ship Industrial Park, broke ground on May 18 with investments totaling roughly 8 billion yuan and will cover 1,588 mu (105.87 hectares).

The Zhijiang base is speeding up the technological upgrading and six shipbuilding companies have completed transforming their workshops.

In the Zigui base, its power battery production project has already completed 80 percent of its factory infrastructure construction.
