Four new species have been discovered at Hubei Wufeng Houhe National Nature Reserve. Researchers announced the results of the reserve’s latest resource survey on June 2.

The new species included three plants -- phytolacca exiensis, silene sunhangii and youngia hangii -- as well as one fish: rhinogobius houheensis. Papers on the newly discovered species have been published.

In addition, the survey updated the list of species in this reserve. The survey, combined with  genetic analysis, has accounted for the gaps in knowledge on macro-fungal and moss lichens in this reserve.

The Hubei Houhe National Nature Reserve is in the south-central part of Wufeng Tujia Autonomous County, Yichang City. Its main conservation task is to preserve the mid-subtropical forest ecosystem and endangered wildlife species, including davidia involucrata (colloquially called the “Dove Tree”), leopards, hairy-fronted muntjacs and other critically endangered animal and plant species.

The results of this survey show that the Houhe area has the distinctive feature of a geographic transition area. It is an ecological corridor connecting North and South China, meaning it is important in promoting biodiversity exchange and conservation in Central China.
