The January to April period saw a strong recovery in Yichang's culture and tourism market.
By April 30, Yichang had received over 29 million domestic tourists, up 69% year on year, and achieved tourism revenue of 28 billion yuan (US$3.94 billion), almost double the figure for the same period in 2022 when the pandemic was still having a big impact.
Since the beginning of the year, Yichang's culture and tourism departments have taken proactive measures to boost tourism, with delegations visiting regions such as Xiangyang, Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Macao.
In February, Yichang welcomed a huge tour group of 6,000 people, the largest tour group on a single day so far this year in Hubei Province. Major travel agencies have been inundated with orders, with June reservations strong.
Travel subsidies covering train, high-speed train, chartered plane, chartered boat, bus and private cars are also playing a role.
In April, Yichang hosted the 16th Hubei Games and staged the drama "Qu Yuan" about its famous native son.
Next up was the 2023 Yichang Marathon during the May Day holiday and "May Day Celebration" fireworks.
At the 2nd China (Wuhan) Culture and Tourism Expo, the Yichang Culture and Tourism Bureau sold more than 3 million yuan (US$422,000) worth of cultural and tourism products in five days.
Since April, visitor numbers in Yichang's 5A scenic spots, including the Three Gorges Dam Tourism Area, Three Gorges Indigenous Scenic Area, and Qingjiang River Gallery Scenic Resort, are all above the monthly average for the same period in 2019.
The positive trends in cultural and tourism development bodes well for air travel. Yichang Three Gorges Airport plans to operate up to 740 flights per week during the summer and autumn, a 26% increase over 2019 and the highest number of flights since the airport opened.
Yichang Three Gorges Airport also intends to introduce flights to popular domestic tourist destinations such as Dali and Xinjiang, as well as cross-border travel routes to Bangkok, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh, Seoul and other locations.
Yichang is aiming to restore tourist arrivals to 2019 levels and achieve year-on-year tourism revenue growth of over 15%.
