Yichang City has deployed 49 units of fire-fighting unmanned aerial equipment across its nature reserves, state-owned forest farms, remote forest areas, and blind spots in the forest fire video surveillance system, opening up an automatic and intelligent new method for wildfire surveillance and suppression.
These units include four DJI Mavic 3E drones, 35 DJI Matrice M30T drones, and 10 DJI Docks. The DJI docks enable the drones to automatically take off, navigate, send back data, charge, and self-check. The drones can be scheduled to do automated patrols in key forest areas of Yichang.
According to Wu Di, deputy director of the Forestry and Parks Bureau of Yichang City, forest patrol drones have great advantages over human forest rangers in two major ways. Firstly, the work done by drones per hour is equivalent to that of a forest ranger over four days. Secondly, drones can easily tackle long-existing issues such as the inaccuracy of satellite and remote sensing, the limited range of ground-based monitoring devices, and the limited capabilities in closely tracking fire developments.
