Construction began on the Yichang North Station a few days ago. The station is part of the Wuhan-Yichang section of the Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu high-speed railroad, which runs from east to west along the Yangtze River.

The new station is located in Longquan Town, Yiling District, Yichang City, 30 km from the city center. It is designed with a maximum capacity of 5,000 people and dispatches 2,942 people per hour at peak times.

The Wuyi (Wuhan-Yichang) section is designed to run at a speed of 350 kilometers per hour. It starts from Hankou Railway Station and ends at Yichang North Railway Station. There are 6 stations along the route: Hanchuan East, Tianmen North, Jingshan South, Zhongxiang South, Jingmen West and Dangyang West. The Wuyi section will take 4 years to complete with a total investment of 5.27 billion yuan (US$7.4 billion). Since construction began on September 25, 2021, more than 80% of the roadbed filling and about 70% of the tunnel construction has been completed.

The Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu high-speed railway, also known as the Yangtze River high-speed railway, passes through six provinces and cities, including Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei, Chongqing and Sichuan, with a total length of about 2,100 kilometers. It consists of seven projects from Shanghai to Hefei, Hefei to Wuhan, Wuhan hub through train, Wuhan to Yichang, Yichang to Fuling, Fuling to Chongqing, and Chongqing to Chengdu. It is expected to take only six hours to travel from Shanghai to Chengdu with the completion of the project by 2030.

China is building a massive "Eight Vertical and Eight Horizontal" high-speed railway network. As one of the horizontal lines in the network, the Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu high-speed railway is of great significance in promoting the construction of the Yangtze River comprehensive transportation system and the development of the Yangtze River economic belt.
